Sharing Some Thoughts
By James O. Shell (Baltimore Aikikai)

Many times I have tried to find some meaningful thought and/or idea to share in the Aikido newsletter. I have come up with the following list of how that will happen:
1.) I will win a big state lottery
2.) I will be abducted by space aliens ( #s 1 & 2 have about the same probability)
3.) I will have a meaningful thought and/or idea to share
While I am waiting for the above to happen and before the aliens come to get me I would like to share some everyday down to earth thoughts.
Years of practice have brought me into contact with an overwhelming number of intelligent people, many of whom are also very highly educated. It is easy to spot the intelligence in practice, if you notice how people watch what is being shown, question them selves, try, and when a mistake is made they immediately start the process again. It is not a process of simple imitation and copy it is a process of making a move part of your self not just a copy of another person. These are common aspects of successful people no matter where you find them.
The last time I checked more than 12,000 people logged onto "Aikido East" and that is just the current edition. . The credit of bringing together literally thousands of intelligent, hard practicing, loyal people from across this country is the credit of Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei. At some point in my life I wish I could say I have so positively effected even a small percentage of that number. Thank you Sensei. The best I can do is my cat kind of likes me, but then I think that is because I just fed him.
Now that I have told 12,000 plus people how intelligent I think they are I have some questions the answers to which you might want to share with the other intelligent people who read this "news letter". Here is a clue; the aliens are coming to get you sooner than you think. Do not wait for some monumental answer before responding .If I can figure out how to put spell check back on my computer you should be able to come up with some answers.
1.) What are the proper flowers to use with O Sensei's picture?
2.) What reason would you give to a friend to take Aikido instead of one of the other martial arts?
3.) If you were in charge of bringing in new students to your Aikikai how would you do it?
4.) What differences have you seen in practice inside and outside the U.S.A.?
5.) What is the name of that film shown at this years summer camp, I keep getting the same look from the movie rental store employees when I try and describe it?
6.) What do you do to protect sore or damaged knees during practice?
7.) If you are left handed do you wear your swords on your right side?
That does it for now. Thank you for reading my thoughts.
