Water Oak Aikikai 2005 O-Shogatsu

On January 8th Water Oak Aikikai held its 2005 O-Shogatsu (New Years Celebration).

The annual event was attended by 23 participants from 4 dojos: Aikido of Charlotte, Charlotte Aikikai, Raleigh Aikikai and Water Oak Aikikai. Even Mother Nature graced us with her presence. The temperature was just right for training and the constant, soft breeze kept the wind chimes going.

After a few words of welcome and introduction we had a few minutes of deep breathing. This gave each person the chance to reflect on the past year and to look forward to the coming year. Then each person executed 1000 sword cuts. This misogi is a symbolic way of forging the spirit through difficult physical activity. After the cuts were completed the senior Aikidoka conducted a mini seminar. The teaching was presented by Charles Huff (3rd Dan Charlotte Aikikai), Chris Crandall (3rd Dan Raleigh Aikikai) and William McLuskie (3rd Dan Water Oak Aikikai).

This special event was held in an intimate, traditional dojo nestled in the woods of North Carolina. It gave each participant a unique opportunity to celebrate the journey from one year to the next. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
