Aikido of Try-Co_Lan 2008

Aikido As An After-School Enrichment Program

This September, Aikido of Try-Co-Lan instructors Paul and Anne Buchanan begin their third year as part of the after-school enrichment program of Tryon NC Elementary School. The Buchanans conduct an 8-week "Introduction to Aikido" course for second through fifth graders each semester. The 15 to 20 students learn some Aikido history, class ettiquete, how to take ukemi, basic Aikido movement, and aÊfew techniques. At the end of the course, each student receives a certificate for his or her achievement. Aikido is the most popular offering in this local after-school program. Several students repeat the course in order to practice more.

Over the last two years, Aikido of Try-Co-Lan has donated four 6x12 foldout mats to Tryon Elementary to augment their existing four 20-year old mats. Aikido of Try-Co-Lan serves Tryon and Columbus, NC and Landrum, SC Ð three small towns in the Blue Ridge Mountain Foothills.
